Xavier goes awol

Published 25 April, 2017 | By Cilla Kinross

I was dreading this post as Xavier went missing for nearly three days, a very unusual, if not unheard of, behaviour. I was really getting quite worried, not helped by quite heavy rain today.

However, all is well, and he bounced back into the body early this morning for a quick dance with Diamond, who seemed quite pleased to see him. And his been on the ledge for a while this afternoon, too.

These shots were taken prior to has absence…perhaps he was banished for bad behaviour ie not giving up his prey. Diamond was not impressed when left with empty claw!

Orange NSW A new male in our box

Published 21 March, 2017 | By Cilla Kinross A new male in our box

I’m pretty sure this male is not Xavier who was sheltering in the box during a violent thunderstorm this afternoon. Facial/neck markings show a distinct streak. Tail seems broader. Also behaviour was odd: much looking up and around the box as if it was a first visit. What do you think?

------------------

Cilla, I think Xavier is still there. He was easy to recognize, having a white spot on top of his left wing. I see this mark in both last videos.

Orange NSW A lame Diamond, as autumn sets in

A lame Diamond, as autumn sets in

Published 17 March, 2017 | By Scott Banks

The eyrie may have been quiet for a month or two now but Cilla’s still working her way through the surveillance footage in attempts to identify badly reconstituted peregrine meals, and possible intruders. The down time is giving everyone a breather but, hopefully, those 3 youngsters have learnt enough hunting skills that they can go on their way, confident of feeding in their own territories.

Today one of our long time supporters picked up a possible issue with Diamond’s left wing. She appears to be favouring it, and at this stage we can’t tell if she’s injured or broken it but I doubt she’d be able to fly with a broken wing, so we’re hoping for the best. Thanks Kathy, well spotted, and thanks for letting us know!!

The colder weather has finally begun to take effect in Orange, after what’s been a severe and record-breaking summer of high temperatures around New South Wales, but this cooler change will be suiting the peregrines (and their flying food supply larder).

Poetic update

Published 17 February, 2017 | By Cilla Kinross

All quiet; still much too hot and windy and we really need some serious rain and cooler conditions. But both male and female are regularly visiting, but with longer absences than in January. Xavier spent the night in the box one night, which is unusual. Here he is landing at about 8.30 pm.

Sorry about the mkv format. I tried all the other video formats available on this software (Milesone) and none of them worked properly, probably because they are too big (one was 272 MB!). I’ll talk to Scott about this, to see if we can improve things.

Diamond has been often absent at night, but conversely more often in the box during day, indicating that she is no longer chasing after juveniles. It will be really interesting to see if there is a difference next year when (hopefully, fingers crossed) Xavier fathers his own offspring and pays them more attention!

And now for the poem, well song, actually. I coordinate an acoustic music jam in Orange and I was listening to some Irish friends singing ‘Song for Ireland’, when it occurred to me that it was using peregrines as a analogy for freedom (I guess), so here it is. A lovely song by Phil Clough, and superbly song by Mary Black on youtube.
Walking all the day near tall towers where falcons build their nests
Silver winged they fly, they know the call of freedom in their breasts
Soar Black Head against the sky
Between the rocks that run down to the sea
Living on your western shore, saw summer sunsets, asked for more
I stood by your Atlantic sea and sang a song for Ireland
Talking all the day with true friends, who try to make you stay
Telling jokes and news, singing songs to pass the night away
Watched the Galway salmon run like silver dancing darting in the sun
Living on your western shore saw summer sunsets, asked for more
I stood by your Atlantic sea and sang a song for Ireland
Drinking all the day in old pubs where fiddlers love to play
Someone touched the bow, he played a reel, it seemed so fine and gay
Stood on Dingle beach and cast, in wild foam we found Atlantic Bass
Living on your western shore, saw summer sunsets asked for more
I stood by your Atlantic sea and sang a song for Ireland
Dreaming in the night, I saw a land where no man had to fight
Waking in your dawn, I saw you crying in the morning light
Lying where the Falcons fly, they twist and turn all in you e’er blue sky
Living on your western shore, saw summer sunsets asked for more
I stood by your Atlantic sea and I sang a song for Ireland
